Helping a Poisoned Dog Through Induced Vomiting
There could come a time when your dog swallows something poisonous and you can’t get her to a vet. In this situation, you’ll need to remain calm and follow the suggestions below. They describe how to properly help a poisoned dog.
- Call your vet or local poison control center immediately even if you don’t have available transportation. The person who answers the phone may have some helpful tips exclusive to your poisoned dog or type of ingested poison. Some poisons are too dangerous to be regurgitated, so you don’t want to induce vomiting until your vet or poison control center gives you the go-ahead. Gas and drain cleaners for example, will burn your dog’s throat if the dog vomits.
- Only after your vet or poison control center says it’s appropriate to induce vomiting should you give a dog the proper vomit-inducing substance. Many common vomit inducing substances, such as syrup of ipecac, used for people are ineffective on dogs and sometimes harmful. You need to instead, give your dog 1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide for every 10 pounds that it weighs. You’ll of course have to squirt this peroxide into your dog’s mouth with a syringe or baster since it won’t accept a tablespoon.
- After about 5 minutes, your pooch should begin vomiting. If not, give it another dose 10 minutes later.
