Types of Yorkshire Terrier Haircuts (Yorkie Haircuts)
One of the things that identify Yorkies as Yorkies is the haircut -- a haircut that's either short or long. Now when we say long, we mean **really** long. And when we say short, we mean as short as a puppy's hair. A short style is called a "puppy cut" in fact and its easy maintenance makes it one of the more popular Yorkshire Terrier haircuts.
Short Yorkie Haircuts
A variation of the short cut is called the Schnauzer cut. This style sports a short-haired torso with long-haired legs. The face may be trimmed as well, except that it bears a mustache and framing array of hair around the head. Both the Schnauzer and puppy cut reduce grooming chores, but they don't entirely eliminate them.
A short haired Yorkie will still benefit from a weekly bath and daily brushing or combing. Just be aware that the short cut takes away from the traditional Yorkie look. If you plan to exhibit your dog in shows, refrain from giving it a puppy cut or Schnauzer cut. Show officials want to see long Yorkshire Terrier haircuts since the hair length is an AKC recognized standard.
Long Yorkie Haircut
This is the cut that you want for your dog if you plan to show it. One of the characteristics that show judges look for is long-hair because it brings out the dog's natural colors more.
Unlike the short cut, caring for the long cut requires a tremendous amount of care. Aside from weekly washing and daily brushing, long Yorkie hair (for show purposes) also needs wrapping. Wrapping is an all day, every day phenomenon that should never be undone except for maintenance and of course, for showings. As strange as that may sound, wrapping encourages hair growth and it protects the coat from breakage and dirt.
The long cut makes the traditional bow absolutely necessary as well. The bow does more than just flaunt good looks, it helps your dog see. Without it, your pup could be mistaken for a miniature sheep dog (or Cousin It)!
