Moving an Injured Dog
When we have to move an injured dog to a place where it can be treated, one of our biggest fears is inadvertently hurting the dog or worsening an already delicate wound. Here’s how to do it in a way that minimizes pain and harm.
- Muzzle the dog so that it doesn’t try to bite you. All dogs instinctively bite when they’re in pain – even the most placid ones.
- Put a splint on broken limbs to minimize further injury and pain.
- Get an object that can support the dog’s weight and keep the dog parallel during transport. A flat piece of sturdy wood, like a door or low-sitting table could suffice. Even a strong, stiff and large rug is appropriate. If the dog is small, try a strong box.
- Gently place the injured dog into or onto the support. If two people can help with this step, the better. One person can lift the dog’s chest, and the other can lift the dog’s rear. Do this swiftly and gently until the dog is placed upon a sturdy surface.
